Summer Program on Mathematical Modeling 2024

Course description

In this summer program, we provide participants with a basic and an advanced introduction to mathematical modeling of biological phenomena with special focus on population dynamics. Participants will take a series of lectures on application of dynamical systems to population biology and participate in computer programming to learn how to solve and simulate various mathematical models including ODE and stochastic models. English is official language used in this program. Certificate of participation will be issued by the Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University.

Organization

The program will be organized with 5 working days and social events. Day 1 to 3 are lectures (9:00- 12:00) and computer simulation and exercise at a NWU computer room (13:00- 16:00). On Day 4, participants work on specific topics and prepare and give presentation on the final day of Day 5.

Lecture topics (subject to change):

1) Dynamical systems as ODE to describe population dynamics
2) Stochastic population dynamics in which population size is integer-valued
3) Advanced topics about spatial population dynamics as point process, etc.

Prerequisites

Participants are supposed to have basic knowledge of algebra and calculus taught at undergraduate level as well as basic skill in computer programming in any computer programming language. In simulation class, we will mainly use python3. Participants will have access to computer facilities (Linux/Windows PC) and Wi-Fi, etc. at NWU computer rooms. However, participants are encouraged to bring own laptop computer with python3 installed.

Tuition

NWU charges no fee for this program. Participants, however, should cover travel expenses, accommodation, living costs and insurance, etc., by themselves.

Who can apply?

• We accept students (both female and male) basically from NWU partner universities, e.g., Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an Polytechnic University, Soochow University, Wuhan University in China, Ewha Womans University in Korea, University of Leicester in UK, University of Auckland, Lincoln University in New Zealand, etc. Please consult your university's international office if your university has concluded official partnership with NWU. Here is a list of NWU partner universities.
• NWU students interested in mathematical modeling.
• We plan to accept a maximum of 15 students from partner universities outside Japan and 5 from NWU (max. 20 in total).

• An application form should be sent by email to the contact address below with subject "SPMM2024". Please include the following information in the the application form:
  • Full name (Family and given names)
  • Gender (Female/Male)
  • Affiliation (E.g., School of Mathematical Sciences, Soochow University, China)
  • Grade as of 1 August 2024 (E.g., 4th year of undergraduate completed)
  • Contact information (E-mail and postal address for visa documents if necessary)
  • Brief description of knowledge of algebra, calculus and computer programming (E.g., I am confident in linear algebra and calculus and have a good skill and experience in programming using C, etc.)

• Application deadline is 7 June 2024. We still have a room for participants. Contact us as soon as possible. (10 June 2024)
• Application will be closed when the number of applicants reaches the maximum of 20 (15 from outside Japan and 5 from NWU).
• For accepted applicants from China and other countries who need visa to enter Japan, NWU will issue official documents necessary to obtain visa. Information for access to Nara and accommodation will be also provided (there are several hotels near NWU campus that can be booked online).
• Applications received after the deadline will be considered only if space is available.
