Summer Program on Mathematical Modeling 2018

Course description

In this summer program, we provide participants with a basic and an advanced introduction to mathematical modeling of biological phenomena with special focus on population dynamics. Participants will take a series of lectures on application of dynamical systems to biology and participate in computer programming to learn how to solve and simulate various mathematical models including ODE, PDE and stochastic processes. English is official language used in this program. Certificate of participation will be issued by the Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University.

Organization

The program will be organized with 7 working days and social events. Day 1 to 5 are lectures (9:00- 12:00) and computer simulation and exercise at a NWU computer room (13:00- 16:00). On Day 6 and 7, participants work on specific topics in group and prepare and give presentation on the final day.

Lecture topics (subject to change):

1) Dynamical systems as ODE to describe population dynamics (F Takasu)
2) Spatial population dynamics as reaction diffusion models as PDE (F Takasu)
3) Stochastic population dynamics in which population size is integer-valued (F Takasu)
4) Parallel computing: Introduction of MPI to implement parallel computing of solving PDE (F Takasu, Optional)

Prerequisites

Participants are supposed to have basic knowledge of algebra and calculus taught at undergraduate level as well as basic skill in computer programming in any computer programming language (In simulation class, we will use C language). Participants will have access to computer facilities (Linux/Windows) at NWU computer rooms. Participants are encouraged to bring own laptop computer with preferred programming language installed (C, C++, R, etc.).

Tuition

NWU charges no fee for this program. Participants, however, should cover travel expenses, accommodation, living costs and insurance, etc., by themselves.

Who can apply?

• We basically accept students (both male and female) from NWU partner universities in China (E.g., Wuhan University, Soochow University, etc.). Please consult your university's international office if your university has concluded official partnership with NWU.
• NWU students
• We accept a maximum of 10 students from China and 10 from NWU (max. 20 in total).

  • Full name
  • Gender (Female/Male)
  • Affiliation (E.g., School of Mathematical Sciences, Soochow University, China)
  • Grade as of 1 August 2018 (E.g., 4th year of undergraduate completed)
  • Contact information (E-mail and postal address)
  • Brief description of knowledge of algebra, calculus and computer programming (E.g., confident in linear algebra and calculus and have a good skill and experience in programming using C, etc.)

• Application deadline is 2 June 2018.
• Application will be closed when number of applicants reaches the maximum listed above (10 from China and 10 from NWU).
• For accepted applicants from China, NWU will issue official documents necessary to obtain visa to enter Japan. Information for access to Nara and accommodation will be also provided (there are several hotels near NWU campus that can be booked online).
• Applications received after the deadline will be considered only if space is available.

Time schedule is now available (5 July 2018).

Eathquake waves were noticed in Nara on 18 June. But no damage has been observed at NWU. Program detailes will be open public in the 1st week of July (19 June 2018).

Application from China has been closed. All applicants from China have been accepted. Documents necessary to obtain visa to enter Japan will be soon sent to applicants. (6 June 2018).
