Summer Program on Mathematical Modeling 2024

Date: Monday 5 to Friday 9 of August, 2024

Location: G301 on the 3rd floor of Building G (G Hall), Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University, Nara, Japan

Time schedule*

Day 1, Monday 5 August:

9:00- 9:30 Orientation of SPMM2024 at the computer room G301, Building G, Faculty of Science NWU.
All participants should participate in this orientation. Program contents, instruction and access to computer facilities, Wifi, etc., will be given. All participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop (Linux/Windows/macOS) with python3 + related packages installed.

10:00- 12:00, 13:30- 16:00 Lecture and simulation exercise at G301. Difference equations in discrete time and ordinary differential equation ODE models in continuous time. Numerical methods to solve ODEs.

Day 2, Tuesday 6 August:
9:00- 12:00, 13:30- 16:00 Lecture and simulation exercise at G301. Spatial population dynamics described by reaction-diffusion models as PDE. Turing patterns in PDE models. Integro-difference equation models in continuous space and in discrete time, Coupled lattice models, Lattice models.

Evening: Socializing events with NWU students. BBQ in campus

Day 3, Wednesday 7 August:
9:00- 12:00, 13:30- 15:00 Lecture and simulation exercise at G301. Stochastic population dynamics in continuous time and discrete population size. Gillespie algorithm to implement numerical simulation. Mathematical analysis based on master equation.
15:30- 18:00 Socializing event with NWU graduate students.

Evening A tour to Namba, Osaka

Day 4, Thursday 8 August:
9:00- 12:00 Lecture and simulation exercise at G301. Stochastic population dynamics in discrete time (Branching process), Point pattern dynamics models.

Day 5, Friday 9 August:
9:00- 12:00 Lecture and simulation exercise at G301. Advanced topics of population dynamics.
13:30- 16:00 General discussion. Closing ceremony of SPMM2024 at G301.
