Nara Women's University

Summer Program on Mathematical Modeling 2025

Update log (9 July 2025)
I am pleased to announce Summer Program on Mathematical Modeling 2025 (SPMM2025) organized at Nara Women's University in Nara, Japan in this summer. I do hope SPMM2025 will be a nice opportunity for all participants from all over the world to learn how to model, analyze, and simulate mathematical models in biology. (TAKASU F, 15 April 2025).

Date: Monday 4 to Friday 8 of August 2025

Location: Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University, Nara, Japan

Organizer: TAKASU Fugo (Group of Mathematical Biology, NWU, Japan)

Co-organizers: Fajar Adi Kusumo and Nanang Susyanto (Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia)

Course description

In this summer program, we provide participants with a basic and an advanced introduction to mathematical modeling of biological phenomena with special focus on population dynamics. Participants will take a series of lectures on application of dynamical systems to population biology and participate in computer programming to learn how to solve and simulate various mathematical models including ODE and stochastic models.

English is official language in this program. Certificate of participation will be issued by the Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University.

Organization

The program will be organized with 5 working days and social events. Day 1 to 3 are lectures (9:00- 12:00) and computer simulation and exercise at a NWU computer room (13:00- 16:00). On Day 4, participants work on specific topics and prepare and give presentation on the final day of Day 5.

Lecture topics (subject to change):

1) Dynamical systems as ODE to describe population dynamics
2) Parameter estimation for ODE-based population models using data
3) Stochastic population dynamics in which population size is integer-valued
4) Advanced topics about spatial population dynamics as point process, etc.

Detailed schedule and lecture topics will be announced here when fixed.

Time Schedule is now available here. (9 July 2025)

Prerequisites

Participants are supposed to have basic knowledge of algebra and calculus taught at undergraduate level as well as basic skill in computer programming in any computer programming language. In simulation class, we will mainly use python3. Participants will have access to computer facilities (Linux/Windows PC) and Wi-Fi, etc. at NWU computer rooms. However, participants are strongly encouraged to bring own laptop computer with python3 installed.

Tuition

NWU charges no fee for this program. Participants, however, should cover travel expenses, accommodation, living costs and insurance, etc. by themselves.
