Practical information for NWU and NUE students to join SPMM2025 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Update log (10 June 2025)
SPMM2025 in Yogyakarta is held at Universitas Gadjah Mada UGM and at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta UNY in the city of Yogyakarata, Indonesia from Monday 8 to Satuday 13 September 2025. All NWU participants should arrive in Yogyakarta on Sunday 7 because the program starts from the moring of Monday 8.
After SPMM2025 in Yogyakarta, we plan move to Universitas Negeri Surabaya UNESA in Surabaya, the 2nd largest city in Indonesia. At UNESA, we will join academic activities (lectures and exercise on mathematical modeling, and socializing with UNESA students). Activities at UNESA will be on Monday 15, Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 September. We plan to leave Surabaya on Thursday 18 September back to Japan.
Activities at UNESA will be an independent academic event, apart from SPMM2025 in Yogyakarta, to which all NWU students are welcome to join.
Recommended schedule
- Saturday 6 September: Departure from Osaka Kansai International Airport KIX
- Sunday 7: Arrival at Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta International Airport YIA
- Monday 8 to Saturday 13: SPMM2025 in Yogyakarta at UGM and UNY
- Sunday 14: Move to Surabaya from Yogyakarta by train (about 4 hours)
- Monday 15 to Wednesday 17: Activities at UNESA in Surabaya
- Thursday 18: Departure from Surabaya, Juanda International Airport SUB
- Friday 19: Arrival at Osaka Kansai International Airport KIX
Estimated costs
- International flights (Osaka Kansai <---> Yogyakarta, Surabaya): About JPY100,000 by Scoot via Singapore
- Accommodation in Yogyakarta (7 nights): JPY2,000 to 6,000 per night
- Train fee from Yogyakarta to Surabaya: JPY2,000 to 5,000
- Accommodation in Surabaya (4 nights): JPY2,000 to 6,000 per night
- Daily costs (meals, etc.): JPY2,000 or more per day
ALL participants who join SPMM2025 in Yogyakarta should check and process items below:
- Apply for SPMM2025 in Yogyakarta by contacting Takasu-sensei.
- Obtain your passport, if you don't have it yet.
- Check "valid duration" of your passport. Your passport should be valid for more than six months when you enter Indonesia in early September 2025. Otherwise, your entry to Indonesia will not be permitted.
- Apply for e-Visa (VISA on Arrival e-VOA) from this site BEFORE you enter Indonesia. You need passport information to appy for e-VOA.

- Reserve your international flights and accomodation in Yogyakarta and Surabaya. Ask Takasu-sensei for reservation of international flights and accommodation.
- Report your visit to Indonesia at Division International of NWU and NUE.
Practical information
How to get to Yogyakarta
- There are NO direct flights to Yogyakarta YIA from Osaka Kansai KIX. Transit at Singapore Changi airport SIN (KIX --> SIN --> YIA -- train --> SUB --> SIN --> KIX) will be easiest. Other routes such as via Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia are possible.
- Yogyakarta airport YIA is connected to the city center by airport link train, ca. 35 min. to Yogyakarta Station in the city center. IDR20,000 for one wey.
General information for your visit to Indonesia
- Currency in Indonesia is Rupiah IDR. Exchange rate is IDR100 ~ JPY1. Remove last two digit zeros to calculate JPY. E.g., IDR1,000,000 (one million) ~ JPY10,000 (ten thousands).
- You can withdraw IDR in cash at ATM. Many shops and restaurants accept credit card. Check if your bank/credit card can be used outside Japan in Indonesia.
- In Yogyakarta and Surabaya, near UGM and UNY and UNESA campus, there are many convenience stores, restaurants, cafes and large shopping malls. Daily goods and grocery are well available.
- Mobile phone is a must-have item in Indonesia. Get ready to use your mobile in Indonesia.
- Transportation within a city is very easy; Use Grab, Gojek, etc. installed in your mobile to call taxi.
- Climate in Yogyakarta and Surabaya is like summer for Japanese people with temperature between 23 and 32C. April to October is dry season. Be prepared for strong sun light. Heavy shower is possible in September.
- Many Indonesian people, but not all, are Muslim. Pay respect to their custom and culture.
