Nara Women's University

Summer Program on Mathematical Modeling 2019

Date: Wednesday 31 July to Friday 9 August, 2019

Location: G301 and G302 on the 3rd floor of Building G (G Hall), Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University, Nara, Japan

Time schedule*

Day 1, Wednesday 31 July:
14:00- 16:00 Orientation of SPMM2019 at the computer room G301, Building G, Faculty of Science NWU.
All participants should participate in this orientation. Program contents, instruction and access to computer facilities will be given. Participants can use computers (Linux/Windows) of G301 to carry on numerical/simulation analyses. But participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop (Linux/Windows/macOS) with your favorite programming languages installed (C, C++, python, R, etc.).

Day 2, Thursday 1 August:
9:00- 12:00 Lecture at G301. Introduction of GAMA, a modeling and simulation development environment for building spatially explicit agent-based simulations.
13:00- 16:00 Exercises on simulations using GAMA at G301

Day 3, Friday 2 August:
9:00- 12:00 Lecture at G301. Some competition ecosystem models and disease System: from microscopic to macroscopic
13:00- 16:00 Exercises on simulations using GAMA at G301

Day 4, Saturday 3 August:
9:00- 16:00 Socialization events with NWU students in and around Nara

Day 5, Sunday 4 August:
9:00- 16:00 Socialization events with NWU students in and around Nara

Day 6, Monday 5 August:
9:00- 12:00 Lecture at G301. Population biology and dynamical systems as non-spatial models including some population genetics models. Spatially explicit models (Reaction diffusion models, integral models, and lattice models, etc.)
13:00- 16:00 Exercises on numerical simulations of non-spatial/spatial models

Day 7, Tuesday 6 August:
9:00- 12:00 Lecture at G301. Stochastic population dynamics and genetics as stochastic processes. Generation of random numbers and its application to simulate stochastic processes such as birth and death process, a first step to implement agent-based models that parallel with analytic (equation-based) models.
13:00- 16:00 Exercises on numerical simulations of stochastic processes

Day 8, Wednesday 7 August:
9:00- 12:00 Lecture and exercises on spatially explicit stochastic models.
13:00- 16:00 Preparation of final presentation at G301. Participants are requested to work on a (simple) project in which a mathematical model is constructed and analyzed at G301

Day 9, Thursday 8 August:
9:00- 12:00 Preparation of final presentation at G301
13:00- 16:00 Final presentation at G301

Day 10, Friday 9 August:
10:00- Conferment ceremony of participation to SPMM2019 at G302
